Science and research Review of evidence on the impact of gulls on wild birds in the UK
Currently, there is very little documented evidence of gull predation on ground-nesting birds. This review will help us identify areas for further research on gulls.
In 2021, the GWCT successfully bid for a research project to undertake a rapid evidence assessment (REA) of the predation impact of gulls on wild birds. Gull species have been removed from general licences in the UK even though the evidence base in relation to conservation is unclear.
This REA will deliver a population review of gulls as well as gather and assess information on predation events by gulls on wild birds. The work will summarise the impacts of such gull predation, as well as present management measures that can mitigate these impacts.
We investigate the suggestion that gamebird release supports high fox population densities.
This work will provide a better insight into where reared birds go after their release and could help keepers better manage their birds.Â
